The brand takes its name from the name of the valley that is located northeast of the village of Terranuova Bracciolini. These lands were nothing more than sea beds later emerged due to the shift of tectonic plates. In this area remained a lake whose banks lapped the surrounding hills. The story explains the composition of the soil, partly clay and partly silty, but rich in marine fossils today precious nourishment for the roots of the vines. This area is the entrance from the south of the beautiful area of the “Balze del Valdarno”, also portrayed in the masterpiece of Leonardo Da Vinci: the Mona Lisa. Water, however, also attracted terrestrial animals that often remained trapped in the mud. A land difficult to live for both animals and man, hence the name “PODERE INFERNO”.
In these lands, manually worked by farmers and of course by rainwater, we walked as kids in sunny periods in search of fossils.
These campaigns, already identified in Cosimo III’s 1716 ban, are mentioned as a place of quality for the production of wine. They were the property of Count Bettino Ricasoli, then sold in 1942 to the family of Marquis Canevaro and later taken over by Trippi Renato.
The members of Tenuta la Fratta sas: The 4 members share a passion for wine. They are all graduates of the Italian Sommelier Association, a body recognized nationally by Decree of the President of the Republic. Strongly linked for various reasons to Terranuova Bracciolini: I grew up there and in these vineyards they spent carefree moments from their youth. The vineyards that today they cultivate have represented for decades the Garden of Terranuova, sweet hills overlooking the town combed by long rows.
A few years ago these vineyards were left uncultivated and nature had begun to take back its space. During a dinner they showed concern to see those lands bought by who knows who and to do who knows what. A unique landscape with unique oenological qualities of our Tuscany!
The statement came spontaneously: “Why not join forces? Why not restore Newfoundland’s garden to its former glory? After all, the union makes strength and fatigue becomes a pleasure!”
So in 2021 they decided to take over about 8 hectares of uncultivated vines for 3 years. The work to do? So much! The vineyards have to be restored, restored, cleaned up, brought back to production. There are numerous failures but here there are “Viti Antiche” over 50 years old. A historical genetic heritage: Sangiovese, Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia del Chianti, Colorino and Foglia Tonda these are the native vines that could be rediscovered during the first harvest of 2022. Heritage that with time want to enhance and revalue because here the wine that is produced is straightforward, fragrant and very drinkable.
