Tenuta Licinia is located at the foot of the Tuscan Apennines, in an uncontaminated natural setting, close to the beautiful medieval village of Lucignano on the border between the provinces of Siena and Arezzo.
The property consists of 60 hectares of woodland, 5.5 hectares of vineyards and 3 hectares of olive groves.
The vines were planted in 2007 by Jacques de Liedekerke. The winemaker is now James Marshall-Lockyer, his grandson, who works alongside Julien Lavenu from Bordeaux.
Jacques de Liedekerke, a left bank enthusiast, was spurred on by the success of cabernet sauvignon in Tuscany.
Jacques believed that the central Tuscan Apennines, with its cool September nights and schistose soils could offer structural charismatic cabernet blends without over-oaking. He hoped to make clos style wines, something atypical for Cabernet in Europe to keep his wines united with their subsoils.
Lucignano has an ancient history with wine beginning at the time of the Etruscans, but viticulture died out during the social upheavals of the 20th century. The plot on which the vines were replanted had been famous in the local region for producing exceptional wines and Jacques hoped to bring historic fine wine production back to the local area.
The vines were planted with the belief that central Tuscany, sitting in between the climate zones of Bordeaux and Napa, offered the possibility of making products with the aromatic complexity of Napa wines and the structural elegance of Bordeaux wines.
Tenuta Licinia approaches the idea of terroir driven wines in a specific way: on the schistose soils of Tenuta Licinia, expressing terroir means capturing and highlighting the peculiar graphite and saline dimension of the wine as well as harnessing the aromatic complexity from the vineyard.
